INDIAN HOLLOW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT REPLACEMENT
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The existing wastewater treatment facility serving the Indian Hollow Elementary
School was constructed in 1987 and is nearing the end of its useful service life and
in need of replacement. The replacement facility will have a hydraulic design
capacity of 7,000 GPD, identical to the existing facility, will be located immediately
adjacent to the existing treatment works, and use the existing outfall line that
presently conveys treated effluent to Hogue Creek.
The new treatment facilities will have the following unit processes:
Coarse screening (retrievable debris basket)
Flow equalization (50% of ADF)
Duplex equalization pumps
Equalization flow control box
Biological Stabilization (long term extended aeration, 1.5 ADF)
Clarification
Duplex effluent pumps (airlift sludge return pumps)
Disinfection (ultraviolet radiation)
Outfall line (existing)
Aerated sludge holding (ultimate disposal to POTW)
The effluent limits include a CBODS limit of 15 mg 11. It is proposed to meet this
parameter by means of very conservatively sized biological aeration process sizing
(i. e.; detention time at ADF of 36 hours; F:M ratio << 0.1).
Examination of the recent performance data at the similarly lightly loaded
Gainesboro Elementary School wastewater shows that very low effluent 6013;
values are consistently attained. (The fact that these are BOD5 as opposed to CBOD;
adds an even greater confidence to the analysis.
RELIABILITY CLASSIFICATION
The VPDES Permit sets the reliability classification of the Indian Hollow facility as
Class II. The reliability requirements are met in the following manner:
• Emergency Storage of influent Flow - 60% of ADF.
• High water alarms on equalization basin and effluent pump well.
• Continuous UV intensity monitoring with low intensity and lamp out alarm
functions.
• Duplex equalization pumps, effluent pumps and aeration blowers.
