Therefore, we recommend approval of the subject plan. You requested a variance to utilize Silt Soxx as a perimeter control for the erosion and sediment control measures. The plan indicates the use of Silt Soxx in lieu of wire reinforced silt fence and a sediment trap. Silt Soxx is not an approved erosion and sediment control device listed in the Virginia Erosion and Sediment Control Handbook (VESCH). However, based on the information you provided with the plan, it appears that Silt Soxx will effectively protect off -site areas from sediment run-off. Therefore, we approve your variance request to utilize Silt Soxx in lieu of wire reinforced silt fence and a sediment trap. The installation of the Silt Soxx shall be carefully monitored and inspected once complete. We are requesting that you notify our office when the material is scheduled to be placed to allow us to observe the installation. If the Silt Soxx does not achieve the level of protection provided by use of a silt fence and/or sediment trap, you will be required to install the necessary wire reinforced silt fence and sediment traps.
