Look for Her Newly Bound Old Books at the Movies Star Photo by Rick Foster Bookbinder Jill Holden works on a books at her home on Green Spring Road. By TERRIE MAHONEY Star staff Writer If you ask Jill Holden what her impression is of moviemakers, she'll tell you they are odd. Holden discovered that, in- stead of doing business over the telephone or through the mail, the moviemaker she dealt with likes to communicate through yellow sticky notes. It all began a few months ago when a man called Holden and asked her for some information on reconditioning a leather sad- dle. Holden, a bookbinder who works out of her home on Green Spring Road in Frederick Coun- ty, helped him as much as she could but explained that her ex- pertise was in bookbinding. Holden never expected to hear from the man again. But a cou- ple of months later, a book ar- rived in the mail that needed to have its binding strengthened, she said. The book, a volume of poetry A volume of poetry from the 1830s that Jill Holden repaired was sent to her by Mark Hughes, who was involved in se- lecting props for a new movie, "The Sommersby," starring Richard Gere and Jodie Foster. from the 1830s, was sent to her by Mark Hughes, who Holden learned was involved in selecting props for a new movie, "The Sommersby," starring Richard Gere and Jodie Foster. While repairing the book, Holden learned from Hughes that it was one of the props for the movie. "He just mentioned in passing it's one of Jodie Foster's props," she said. After Holden repaired the po- etry book, Hughes sent her two more books —an 1830s volume of Shakespeare and an early-19th- century copy of Homer's "Il- iad." Through sticky notes attached to the books, Hughes told Holden that he wanted her to rebind the clothbound copy of the "Iliad" with a leather cover to make it look like the volume of Shakespeare. He also wanted her to change the title on the Shakespeare book to the "Iliad" so it could be used as a backup in case anything happened to the acutal copy of the "Iliad."
