Action - Approved
Mr. Bill Tisinger, attorney, was present to represent
Interstate Properties Limited Partnership, the owners of the
TraveLodge of Winchester. Mr. Tisinger said that the height of
the sign will be 60' and the sign itself will be 8' X 26' . Mr.
Tisinger said that the reasons for replacing the sign are that
persons traveling on I-81 can not readily see the TraveLodge and
that the TraveLodge logo has been slightly revised. Mr. Tisinger
described the area as heavy commercial and noted that other signs
in the area ranged from 60'-75' in height.
Mr. Tisinger introduced Pat Embry, Manager for the
TraveLodge, and Mr. Joe Woodward, of Sanford -Inge Sign Company.
The board members discussed the location of the sign with
the applicant. They.also discussed what existing signs. would be
removed.
Mr. Harry Aikens and Mrs. Christine Aikens, owners of the
office building next to the TraveLodge, came forward to speak in
opposition to the variance request. Mr. Aikens said that he and
his wife live in the penthouse of the office building and the
proposed TraveLodge sign would block the view from their balcony.
He felt that obstructing the view would also effect potential
rentors for their office space.
In light of the fact that this was a commercial area and
other signs of this height existed in the area, the Board was
generally in favor of approving the variance.
Upon motion made by Mr. Wakeman and seconded by Mr.
Garrett,
BE IT RESOLVED, That the Frederick County Board of Zoning Appeals
does hereby unanimously approve Variance Application #003-89 of
TraveLodge of Winchester for a 25' height variance for a sign.
This property is located on Route 522 South, at the intersection
of Routes 50 East, 522 South, and I-81, and is identified as
Parcel 1-D on Tax Map 64 in the Shawnee Magisterial District.
