Near River
LONDON (AP) — Queen Eliza-
beth II gave birth to a son to-
day.
An announcement from Buck-
i ingham Palace said the 33-year-
old mother and her baby were
both "doing well."
The baby, first born to a reign-
ing British monarch in 103 years,
arrived at 3:30 p.m. (10:30 a.m.
EST) .
The Queen's third child and
second pri ice, the baby takes sec-
ond place in the line of royal suc-
cession to Prince Charles.
The official bulletin said:
"The Queen was safely deliv-
ered of a son at 3:30 p.m. to-
day.
"Her majesty and the infant
prince are both doing well."
It was signed by the Queen's
gynecologist a n d obstetrician,
John Peel, and her physicians,
Sir John Weir and Lord Evans.
The las, queen to have a baby
while actually head of the mon-
archy was Queen Victoria. Her
youngest child, Princess Beatrice,
was born in 1857.
There were indications that
Elizabeth II had undergone a
1 for a Wincheser somewhat difficult labor.
She felt the first birth pangs
ng since Wednesday Thursday morning.

Thursday night at the palace.
Assisting him at the delivery
were Evans, Weir, and Dr. Ver-
non Hall, an anesthetist.
In the earlier stages of labor i
the queen was attended by two
maternity nurses, Helen Rowe
and Annette Wilson.
Nurse Rowe also acted as mid-
wife at the births of Prince
Charles, the heir -apparent, now
11, and Princess Anne, 9. Both
were born before the Queen suc-
ceeded her late father, George VI,
on the throne in 1952.
The new baby's name will be
secret until his christening, per-
haps a month from now.
The time-honored palace an-
nouncement that the doctors "are
in attendance" upon the Queen
came at 2:15 p.m. By tradition,
this phrase signals the imminent
birth of royal babies.
Sometimes — as in the case of
Princess Anne Aug. 15, 1950—this
announcement has followed the
actual birth. On that occasion, the
"in attendance" announcement
was issued at 11:22 a.m. Anne
had in fact been born 32 minutes
before, at 10:50 a.m.
The explanation: The palace
observed the protocol of notifying
official London representatives of
all 10 British Commonwealth na-
tions before making the birth
1 public.

Stormy Weather Gives Repeat
Performance in East,, South
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Heavy snow, strong winds and
ain lashed wide sections of the
louth and East today, a virtual
epeat performance of winter's
econd violent climatic attack in
ass than a week.
The stormy weather, erupting in
he Southland, swept northward in
) the East, following the pattern
f the blockbuster which ripped
cross the eastern quarter of the
aion last weekend.
Snow piled up more than a foot
igh in Kentucky and Tennessee
nd Virginia.
Tornadoes skipped across see-
ons of Louisiana, Florida and
orth Carolina. Winds up to 80
a.p.h. pounded western Virginia,
iling huge drifts of heavy, wet
low.
Gale -force winds battered the
ulf States and veered northeast-
ard. Gale warnings were dis-
layed along the Atlantic Coast
om Daytona Beach, Fla,, to
Eastport, Maine.
Sections of Kentucky, Tennes-
see, North Carolina and Virginia
were virtually paralyzed by the
heavy snow.
The snow belt stretched from
northern Alabama across much of
the South. Moderate to heavy
snow fell from eastern Tennessee
and Kentucky northeastward over
inland areas of the Northeast.
Property damage throughout the
storm belt was extensive. Hun-
dreds of autos and trucks were
marooned.
Schools were closed in many
states, _including North Carolina,
Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee,
Ohio and West Virginia.
Power and communication serv-
ice was disrupted. At least three
communities in eastern North Car-
olina were without power service.
Tornadic winds hit Charlotte,
snapped utility poles and caused
thousands of dollars damage to
parked autos.
The Weather Bureau posted
warnings for moderate to heavy
snow and hazardous driving con-
ditions from southwest Virginia
and eastern Kentucky northward
through West Virginia, western
Maryland, eastern Ohio, most of
Pennsylvania and New York state
into Connecticut. Snow was in
prospect for New England.
Heavy rain pelted coastal areas
from Boston to Philadelphia.
Strong winds, with a mixture of
snow and rain, lashed the New
York metropolitan area. Gusts of
50 m.p.h. ripped down power lines,.
signs and awnings and broke win-
dows.
Wind gusts were clocked at 67
m.p.h. in a heavy rainstorm in
Washington, D.C. Trees and pow-
er lines were toppled.
The cold air which covered the
midcontinent behind the storm in
the east fanned into Dixie, drop-
ping temperatures below freezing.
It was 15 below zero in northern
Midwest areas but no heavy snow
was reported.
