canopy and its foundations at the time of permit application.
Please confirm front setback requirement for pumps from rt. 644. Distance is
not shown and VDOT may be more restrictive than the building code.

SECTION F-3204.0 ATMOSPHERIC STORAGE TANKS
F-3204.1 Storage tanks: All shop -fabricated flammable and
combustible liquid storage tanks of any capacity shall bear the
label of an approved agency. The label shall indicate the intended
use of the tank. Bolted and field -welded tanks shall comply with
this code and the structural and inspection requirements of the
building code listed in Chapter 44. The tanks shall comply with
one of the standards listed in Table F-3204.1.

SECTION F-3205.0 FUEL -DISPENSING SYSTEMS
F-3205.1 General: Motor vehicle fuels shall be transferred to
vehicle tanks by means of approved dispensing units. The trans-
fer of such liquids shall not be made into an open container.
F-3205.1.1 Portable tanks: These provisions shall not pre-
vent the utilization of portable or semiportabie tanks and
dispensing devices to refuel vehicles or motorized equipment
on premises to which the public does not have access, pro-
vided that specific approval is obtained.
F-3205.2 Installation: All fuel -dispensing systems shall be in-
stalled in accordance with this section, the mechanical code and
NFPA 30 or 30A listed in Chapter 44. Gaseous motor fuel
:lispensing shall comply with Section F-3607.0 and the mechani-
-al code listed in Chapter 44.
F-3205.3 Controls: Dispensers shall be designed to prevent
eakage or accidental discharge and shall be provided with re -
note master control devices to shut off all pumps in the event of
n emergency. Such devices shall be adequately identified as
)ump shutoff controls.
3205.4 Dispenser protection: Each fuel dispenser island shall
protected against impact by a motor vehicle at each end where
vehicle approaches the island. Dispensers not mounted on an
land shall be individually protected against motor vehicle
:lpact. Physical barriers around surface -mounted fuel dispenser
lands shall be a minimum of 30 inches (762 mm) in height and
list a force of 12.000 pounds (53375 N) applied 30 inches (762
°n) above the driving surface.
3205.5 Fuel dispensing outside the building: Fuel dispensers
tside the building shall be located a minimum of 10 feet (3048
n) from the lot line and 5 feet (1524 mm) from any building
ming. Where a dispenser fronts on a street or public way, the
)aration distance shall be measured to the centerline of the
yet or public way. Where fuel is dispensed to motor vehicles,
motor vehicle served shall be located on the premises.
205.6 Fuel dispensing inside the building: Fuel -dispensing
is located inside the building shall be mechanically ventilated
ocordance with the mechanical code listed in Chapter 44. The
-dispensing area shall be protected throughout with an ap-
proved automatic fire .suppression system in accordance with the
building code listed in Chapter 44.
F-3205.7 Nozzles: All dispenser hoses shall be equipped with
automatic self -closing -type nozzles.
F-3205.8 Attendant: Each service station open to the public
shall have an attendant on duty who is familiar with the location
Of pump controls and operation of safety equipment.
F-3205.9 Emergency shutoff valve: An approved emergency
shutoff valve designed to close automatically in the event of a
fire or impact shall be properly installed in the liquid supply line
at the base of each dispenser supplied by a remote pump. The
valve shall be installed so the shear groove is flush with or within
3/4 inch (19 mm) of the top of the concrete dispenser island and
there is clearance for maintenance purposes provided around the
valve body and operating parts. The valve shall be installed at
the liquid supply line inlet of each overhead -type dispenser.
Where installed,'a vapor return line located inside the dispenser
housing shall have a shear section or approved flexible connector
for the liquid supply line emergency shutoff valve to function.
All emergency shutoff valves shall be installed and maintained
in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, tested at the
time of initial installation and tested at least yearly thereafter by
manually tripping the hold -open linkage.
SECTION F-3206.0 FIRE SAFETY REQUIREMENTS FOR SERVICE
STATIONS AND REPAIR GARAGES
F-3206.1 General: Structures or premises occupied for automo-
tive and marine service stations and repair garages shall comply
with this code and the building code and NFPA 30A, 88B and
303 listed in Chapter 44.
F-3206.2 Ignition sources: Motors of vehicles receiving fuel
shall be shut off during the fueling operation. Smoking shall not
be permitted in areas where motor vehicles are fueled or serviced.
F-3206.3 Fuel -dispensing safety: A motor vehicle engine shall
not be operating during the fueling process. Smoking shall be
prohibited in the fuel -dispensing area. The containers into which
fuel is dispensed shall be approved.
F-3206.3.1 Warning signs: Warning signs shall be visibly
posted in every fuel -dispensing area. Such signs shall indicate
a warning against the following:
1. It is illegal and dangerous to fill unapproved containers
with fuel.
2. Smoking is prohibited.
3. The engine shall be shut off during the refueling proc-
ess.
F-3206.3.2 Self-service instructions: Operating instructions
shall be visibly posted on every pump at a self-service fuel -
dispensing area.
F-3206.4 Equipment: All heating and ventilating appliances
and equipment shall comply with the mechanical code listed in
Chapter 44. Other devices generating a glow, spark or flame
capable of igniting flammable vapors shall not be installed or
utilized within 18 inches (457 mm) of the floor of a building.
Welding or cutting operations shall comply with Chapter 22.
F-3206.5 Floor drains: Floors shall drain to oil or gasoline
separators or traps discharging to the sewer installed in accord-
ance with the plumbing code listed in Chapter 44. Contents of
oil separators or traps of floor drainage systems shall be collected
at sufficiently frequent intervals and removed from the premises
to prevent oil from entering the sewers. Self-closing metal cans
shall be utilized for all oily waste or waste oils.
F-3206.6 Daily record: Adaily record shall be maintained when
Class I or II liquids are dispensed. The record shall indicate the
amount of fuel dispensed from each tank and the inventory
remaining. Daily records shall be available for inspection by the
code official to determine if there is any leakage of the tank or
piping.
F-3206.7 Cleaning with flammable and combustible liquids:
The use of Class I or 11 liquids for washing parts or removing
grease or dirt shall comply with Section F-3203.7.
F-3206.8 Basements, pits and subfloor work areas: Electrical
wiring and equipment in basements, pits and subfloor work areas
shall be installed in accordance with Articles 511 and 514 of
NFPA 70 listed in Chapter 44. Ventilation in these areas shall be
in accordance with the mechanical code listed in Chapter 44.
F-3206.9 Portable fire extinguishers: At least one portable fire
extinguisher with a minimum 2-A:40-B:C rating shall be located
within 30 feet (9144 mm) of travel distance in all service stations.
SECTION F-3207.0 ABOVE -GROUND STORAGE TANKS
F-3207.1 General: Flammable and combustible liquid storage
tanks of any capacity installed above ground shall comply with
this chapter.
F-3207.2 Existing tanks: Existing above -ground tank installa-
tions previously approved that constitute a hazard shall not be
continued. The code official shall periodically inspect the exist-
ing installation for safety. Normal and emergency relief venting
shall be maintained in an operative condition. Unsafe tanks shall
be removed from service where required by the code official.
F-3207.3 Maximum outside fuel oil storage above ground:
Where a combustible liquid storage system connects to a fuel oil
piping system, the maximum amount stored outside above
ground without additional protection shall be 660 gallons
(2498 L). Where the amount Mored outside above ground ex-
ceeds 660 gallons (2498 L), the installation shall comply with
NFPA 31 listed in Chapter 44.
F-3207.4 Maximum inside fuel oil storage: Where a combus-
tible liquid storage system connects to a fuel -oil piping system,
the maximum amount stored inside any building shall be 660
gallons (2498 L). Where the amount stored inside a building
exceeds 660 gallons (2498 L), the storage area shall be classified
as Use Group H and shall comply with the building code listed
in Chapter 44.
F-3207.5 Automotive service stations: Above -ground tanks
shall not be utilized for the outside storage of motor fuels at
automotive service stations unless the tanks comply with this
section. Above -ground tanks utilized for the storage of motor
fuels at automotive service stations to which the public does not
have access shall be installed in accordance with this section and
the requirements for fireresistant tanks or tanks in vaults spec
fled in NFPA 30A listed in Chapter 44.
F-3207.5.1 Barrier protection: Physical barriers complyir

F-3208.2 Location: Loads from a structure foundation syst

F-3208.4 High ground water and flood hazard: Tanks
piping installed in areas of high ground water, flood -ha,
zones (A Zones) or high -hazard zones (V Zones) shall be
chored and reinforced to resist hydrostatic and hydrodyna
loads and stresses. The anchoring and reinforcing shall resist
effects of buoyancy with the tank either empty or full when
ground water table is at the high point and during the occurrc
of flooding to the base flood elevation.
