BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING PRESERVATION OF
THE MCCANN FARM
WHEREAS, Judy McCann-Slaughter owns a 98-acre cattle farm, known as the McCann
Farm, in Frederick County, Virginia, that provides productive agriculture, such as food and fiber,
for the local and regional economy, and contains important natural resources such as frontage
along Hiatt Run, a tributary of Opequon Creek, which flows directly into the Potomac River; and
WHEREAS, the McCann Farm is situated partially within the National Park Service
Core Battlefield Boundary for the Third Battle of Winchester and the government of Frederick
County, Virginia, has worked diligently to ensure the preservation ofland within the Core
Battlefield Boundary for the Third Battle of Winchester and the immediately surrounding area;
and
WHEREAS, the Frederick County Comprehensive Policy Plan, adopted on September
27, 2000 by the Frederick County Board of Supervisors, states that its goals include promotion
of the preservation and protection of Civil War Battlefield Resources and protection of important
natural resources; and
WHEREAS, Judy McCann-Slaughter and her family wish to protect their farm in
perpetuity by voluntarily donating a conservation easement to tbe Potomac Conservancy and the
Virginia Outdoors Foundation, and in doing so, will benefit the public for current and future
generations;
NOW, THEREFORE, the Frederick County Board of Supervisors hereby resolves that
it supports the voluntary and pennanent preservation oftbe McCann Farm and that family's
desire to donate a conservation easement to the Potomac Conservancy and the Virginia Outdoors
Foundation.
