RESOLUTION SUPPORTING ADDITIONAL IMPROVEMENTS TO
INTERSTATE 81 IN FREDERICK COUNTY, VIRGINIA
WHEREAS,within Virginia, I-81 connects 30 colleges and universities, 21 cities and towns and 13
counties, and parallels the Blue Ridge Parkway,making this program critical to supporting job
growth and economic vitality while reducing congestion, enhancing safety and reliability, and
improving quality of life for everyone in our region: and
WHEREAS, Nearly 50% of the state's value of goods are transported along the corridor,which has
the highest per capita truck volume in Virginia;and
WHEREAS, Frederick County's geographic location makes it a desirable place for businesses to
locate because companies can reach two-thirds of the U.S. & Canadian population in a day's drive;
and
WHEREAS, I-81 is a key economic artery for not only Frederick County,but also western Virginia;
and
WHEREAS, the I-81 Corridor Improvement Program consists of innovative, targeted
improvements that will have a substantial effect on the safety and reliability of a critical portion of
our nation's infrastructure; and
WHEREAS, the program will implement a series of improvements such as lane extensions to
reduce the rate and frequency of crashes along the corridor. In addition, the program improvements
will reduce congestion and improve reliability by adding capacity in targeted areas of the corridor
and improving speed of incident clearance to help limit travel delays.
WHEREAS,program improvements have been approved to widen I-81 in both directions between
Exit 313 and Exit 317.
NOW,THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Supervisors of the County of
Frederick,Virginia, does hereby support program improvements to widen I-81 in both directions
between Exit 317 and Exit 323, as well as widening in both directions between Exit 307 to currently
planned Exit 313 should additional funding become available.
