SUBJECT: Request to Proceed with the Replacement Gainesboro Elementary School
1) Construction Project Appropriation
2) Reimbursement Resolution
DATE: October 19, 2005
At their meeting on October 18, 2005, the school board approved the forwarding of a request for
board of supervisor appropriation in the amount of $1,000,000 in the school construction fund
and for the commencement of the architectural design, engineering and site testing of a
replacement school for the current Gainesboro Elementary School. Included in the school
board's action was a request to consider a county reimbursement resolution which would allow
the county to fund the expenses associated with the aforementioned items and be reimbursed
with the spring 2006 VPSA bond issue.
The opening date for the new school is anticipated for the fall of 2007. The anticipated timeline
for the project is as follows: building design and site testing -completed by January; bid
solicitatipn -February; evaluation and award of the bid -March; and, mobilization for project
construction -April 2006. This schedule allows for a fifteen month construction phase with one
month to spare for move-in activities.
This project has been on the capital improvement plan for several years. The need far a
replacement of this 1932 building has been discussed at great length. The replacement school
will be larger in capacity than the existing Gainesboro Elementary School and it is planned to be
located on property currently owned by the school division.
This request accompanies a reimbursement resolution to be considered. It is our understanding
that these items can be placed on the October 26, 2005 regular meeting of the board of
supervisors, with a public hearing and formal action on both the appropriation and the
reimbursement resolution on November 9, 2005
