BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
RESOLUTION
INCREASED DRIVER SAFETY, RESPONSIBILITY AND AWARENESS AMONG COMMUNITIES
ALONG VIRGINIA INTERSTATE 81
WHEREAS, according to VDOT, Virginia Interstate 81 is a vital economic and social lifeline for the
communities of west ern Virginia, covering 325 miles with 90 interchanges, serving 29 colleges, 48 historical districts,
and uniting 60% of the state's population, and;
WHEREAS, a common danger is posed to the citizens of western Virginia since, according to VDOT,
traffic on 1-81 has doubled in the last 10 years, ranging from 30,000 to 60,000 vehicles per day with trucks making
up 20 to 40 percent of the traffic mix, and;
WHEREAS, each holiday season, traffic is especially heavy because ofthe number offamilies and students
who travel Virginia 1-81, and;
WHEREAS, necessary future expansion and improvements to 1-81 wil! cause increased hazards and
disruption, and;
WHEREAS, each community along Virginia [-81 has a vested interest in promoting driver safety,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Frederick County Board of Supervisors that:
1, The County of Frederick will join other municipalities in a cal! for increased driver safety, responsibility
and awareness throughout 2000,
2, The county clerk is authorized to invite other Virginia 1-81 counties to join in this resolution,
3. Given the joint nature of this resolution and the need for increased awareness, each participating locality
is invited to participate in a joint public announcement of its resolution at a date in the future to be announced.
