FREDERICK COUNTY FAMILY DAY
WHEREAS, strongfamilies form the basis of neighborhoods throughout Frederick County and are
the foundation of our vibrant, just and peaceful society, and every child across our nation needs and expects
parental love and guidance; and
WHEREAS, the safety and peace of our citizens is daily threatened by the use of illegal drugs in
our schools, homes, neighborhoods and workplaces, and the County of Frederick remains dedicated to
reducing substance abuse; and
WHEREAS, parents, above all others, are uniquely equipped to guide, care and provide for the
welfare of their children, and the Frederick County Board of Supervisors recognizes the duty, ability, and
fundamental right of parents to instruct their children; and
WHEREAS, parents who remain involved with their children's activities greatly reduce the risk of
their using tobacco or illegal drugs or abusing alcohol, and communication between family members is vital
to the healthy growth and development of children and young people; and
WHEREAS, eating dinner as a family enhances family unity, involvement, communication and
support, and children from families that regularly eat dinner together are dramatically less likely to use
tobacco, alcohol or illegal drugs; and
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to honor the family as the most significant and important social unit,
and to support the practice of regular family dinners among Frederick County families;
NOW, THEREFORE, the Frederick County Board of Supervisors does hereby proclaim September
24, 2001 as
*FAMILYDAY*
